Voluntary Benefits eApp

Web, Mobile
Tools:

Team:
Product Owner, Scrum master, Information Architect, Developers, Tester, Copy Writer, UX Designer
Role:
UX/UI Designer
Typically, when an employee is offered a benefits package at their new job it includes common types of coverage such as life insurance, supplementary medical and dental, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and long-term disability. Voluntary Benefits allow customers to add additional group life insurance, life insurance for dependants, and critical illness insurance.
The challenge of voluntary benefits was conveying the right options at the right time while also adhering to a complex and restrictive structure that makes up life insurance. I had to ensure pertinent information was displayed to aid our customers in making the correct choices.

Insights
When presenting a large amount of technical information to a customer it helps to break up the different sections by incorporating a variety of elements. For example, on this Critical Insurance product selection page, I used large panel type buttons that not only differentiate the different product options but are also a visual cue unique to this portion of the task flow. By utilizing this method we help create a more dynamic experience which makes for a less repetitive and dreary task.
Another benefit is that the customer can create a clearer mental map of their progress as they move along. This is very valuable in instances where the customer is given the ability to save their progress and return at a later date.

Once our customers have gone through and provided all their information to us we now have to make sure we can present it back to them in a clear and concise way. If we just throw up a plain chart showing lines upon lines of text not only are we reducing this experience to a very boring task but the customer is more likely to make mistakes. Their attention will wane as they’re put to sleep when they should be paying close attention when reviewing important information before submitting it.
Subtle details help create boundaries between the different areas of data. Bold headings and separation lines of varying thicknesses create a vertical hierarchy while suggested columns further split up the wall of text. As a result we are able to display a large amount of information without losing the customer’s interest.

Role:
UX/UI Designer
As Sun Life grew it recognized the importance of client satisfaction in a holistic way. This included user experience through intelligent and intuitive design. The company started investing in and growing its creative branch as its focus started to grow beyond just the customer experience. It needed to capture the attention of all that great creative talent outside its doors, and show them all the perks of working at SLF. A Design Experience recruiting microsite was born. In 2022 the page needed to be refined and expanded to capture new roles.

Working with a copy writer we had to present SLF’s values for an evolving creative industry. We improved the site to be more inclusive, progressive and accessible. We had carte blanche and could dream big. So we did! By aiming high we developed a no-holds-barred product that included videos, interactive UI, and a stunning experience meant to inspire prospective job applicants. This product would act as our north star and help guide us in creating a 3-tiered proposal. Presenting our ideas this way helped the stakeholders understand our vision. It also got the project off the ground quickly and without any pushback as we were given the green light to start developing right away. We started with the 1st tier as agreed with our stakeholders.

Mockup - Value Prop Page

During this project I was working along side a Lead UX Designer and a copy writer. We were tasked with improving conversion and retention rates by creating a streamlined investment transition process. Working on bi-weekly sprints and utilizing user testing we were able to create drastic design changes in a short amount of time.
When it comes to SLF’s Choice customers there are two major demographics, the investment professionals and the regular less-involved customer who would rather not be reading investment charts. We had to ensure both were covered. The existing design where the customer could hand-pick each investment as they please was left in place and a new feature now called ‘Express’ was introduced. Express allowed the customer to forgo the tedious task of choosing investments and let SLF do the heavy lifting. Our objective was to encourage customers to transfer their existing investments via our newly designed process. Resulting design reduced the original enrolment process by 37%!

Knowing that our customers are visiting this page due to major changes in their employment situation, we had to ensure a sensitive approach. Some customers may be just retiring however others could have just been laid off or terminated and have come to the Choices product to manage their investments. User testing was instrumental when choosing how to handle this situation and make sure our customers felt supported and respected. After a round of tests we had a clear answer and could confidently move on to refining this product.

Our customers valued time and money so it was important we helped them get on with their day. The Choices Express feature was all about that. We designed a way to present important investment details in an easy to understand and compact manner. Using collapsible accordion menus and editing options to allow customization we kept the experience clean and minimal but also detailed enough so as to prevent confusion or frustration.
